The company was established by Executive Director Grant Rule〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=SMS idea booms in a mobile world )〕 and his co-founder, Justin Lau in 2000 in response to the emergence of SMS in Australia. In May 2002, the company secured angel investors and in May 2004 changed its trading name to MessageMedia. In 2014 the company appointed Stuart Marburg,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Netspace co-founder takes reins at MessageMedia )〕〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Netspace co-founder joins MessageMedia as CEO )〕 co-founder of Netspace, as CEO, and Rule remains on the senior executive team.
