Invented in Scotland in 1893 and continually developed since then, the most common household toasting appliances are now the pop-up toaster and the toaster oven. Pop-up toasters make toast from bread in 1 to 3 minutes by using heat elements. Since the 2000s, pop-up toasters with wider slots have been manufactured, enabling these toasters to toast bagels cut in half. Toaster ovens have heat elements above and below a grilling area and function the same as a small-scale conventional oven. They are large enough to heat up such things as a slice of pizza or a burrito. ==History== Before the development of the electric toaster, sliced bread was toasted by placing it in a metal frame or on a long-handled toasting-fork and holding it near a fire or over a kitchen grill. Simple utensils for toasting bread over open flames appeared in the early 19th century.
