ハイリー・センシティブ・パーソン（）とは、生得的な特性として、高度な感覚処理感受性（あるいは、カール・ユングの造語で言えば生得的感受性〔 * Jung, C. (1913). 'The theory of psychoanalysis'. CW 4. * ______ (1916). 'Psychoanalysis and neurosis'. CW 4.〕）を持つ人のこと。共通して見られる特徴として、大きな音、眩しい光・蛍光灯、強い匂いのような刺激に対して敏感であることが挙げられる。HSPはしばしば、豊かで複雑な内的生活を送っているという自覚をもっている。物事に対して容易に驚き、短い時間にたくさんのことを成し遂げるよう要求されると混乱するという性質を持つ。エレイン・N・アーロンや他の研究者によると、HSPは人口の約五分の一を占めるという（男女によって偏りは見られない）。HSPは感覚データを通常よりはるかに深く、かつ徹底的に処理しているが、それは神経システムにおける生物学的な差異によるものだという〔Ketay, S., Hedden, T., Aron, A., Aron, E., Markus, H., & Gabrieli, G.
