machete

A machete (; (:maˈtʃete)) is a large cleaver-like knife, similar to a kukri. The blade is typically long and usually under thick. In the Spanish language, the word is a diminutive form of the word ''macho'', which means male or strong and was used to refer to sledgehammers.〔http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=machete〕 In the English language, an equivalent term is matchet, though it is less commonly known. In the English-speaking Caribbean, such as Jamaica,〔Blair, Teresa P. ''A-Z of Jamaican Patois (Patwah),'' Page 49 (Google Books Result )〕 Barbados, Guyana, Grenada and in Trinidad and Tobago, the term "cutlass" is used for these agricultural tools.〔Klein, John, ("What Is a Machete, Anyway?" ), "The Atlantic'', Oct 21, 2013 (accessed Jan 15 2015)〕
