cummerbund

A cummerbund ((ヒンディー語:कमरपट्टा) ''kamarapaṭṭā'') is a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted dinner jackets (or ''tuxedos'').〔.〕 The cummerbund is an Asian-origin garment which was first adopted by British military officers in colonial India when they were exposed to Indian men wearing it. It was adopted as an alternative to a waistcoat, and later spread to civilian use. The modern use of the cummerbund to Europeans is as a component of a traditional black tie event.
==Etymology==
The word ''cummerband'', ''कमरपट्टा'' in Hindi, is the name commonly used in the South and West Asia including India. It entered English vocabulary in 1616 from India. It is a combination of the Hindi words कमर meaning 'waist',〔http://dict.hinkhoj.com/words/meaning-of-कमर-in-english.html〕 and Band meaning 'strap' or 'lacing'.〔https://translate.google.com/#auto/hi/band〕
A sort of sash accessory worn by Indian men; the ‘kamarband’. The kamarband, a word literally meaning ‘waist-band’ was worn by Indian men for many occasions.
The word ''cummerband'' (see below), and less commonly the German spelling ''Kummerbund'' (a phonetic translation of the English word), are often used synonymously with ''cummerbund'' in English. Today, the word ' in Persian refers to anything which is or works like a belt, be it a clothing belt, a safety belt or a ring road around a city center.
