Va'eira, Va'era, or Vaera ( – Hebrew for "and I appeared" the first word that God speaks in the ''parashah'', in ) is the fourteenth weekly Torah portion (, ''parashah'') in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading and the second in the Book of Exodus. It constitutes . The parashah tells of the first seven Plagues of Egypt.
It is made up of 6,701 Hebrew letters, 1,748 Hebrew words, and 121 verses, and can occupy about 222 lines in a Torah Scroll (, ''Sefer Torah'').〔(【引用サイトリンク】accessdate=July 6, 2013 )Jews read it the fourteenth ''Shabbat'' after Simchat Torah, generally in January, or rarely, in late December.〔(【引用サイトリンク】accessdate=January 8, 2015 )
==Readings==
In traditional Sabbath Torah reading, the parashah is divided into seven readings, or , ''aliyot''. In the Masoretic Text of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible), Parashah Va'eira has nine "open portion" (, ''petuchah'') divisions (roughly equivalent to paragraphs, often abbreviated with the Hebrew letter (''peh'')). Parashah Va'eira has seven further subdivisions, called "closed portion" (, ''setumah'') divisions (abbreviated with the Hebrew letter (''samekh'')) within the open portion (, ''petuchah'') divisions. The first and second open portion (, ''petuchah'') divisions divide the first reading (, ''aliyah''). The third open portion (, ''petuchah'') covers the balance of the first and part of the second readings (, ''aliyot''). The fourth open portion (, ''petuchah'') covers the balance of the second reading (, ''aliyah''). The fifth open portion (, ''petuchah'') divides the fourth reading (, ''aliyah''). The sixth open portion (, ''petuchah'') covers the balance of the fourth, all of the fifth, and part of the sixth readings (, ''aliyot''). The seventh open portion (, ''petuchah'') separates part of the sixth reading (, ''aliyah''). The eighth open portion (, ''petuchah'') covers the balance of the sixth and part of the seventh readings (, ''aliyot''). And the ninth open portion (, ''petuchah'') covers the balance of the seventh reading (, ''aliyah''). Closed portion (, ''setumah'') divisions separate the first and second readings (, ''aliyot''), separate the second and third readings (, ''aliyot''), and divide the fourth, fifth, and sixth readings (, ''aliyot'').〔See, e.g., ''The Schottenstein Edition Interlinear Chumash: Shemos/Exodus''.
