They had close contacts with the Greuthungi, another Gothic people from east of the Dnestr River, as well as the Late Roman Empire (or early Byzantine Empire). ==Etymology== The name "Thervingi" may mean "forest people".〔Wolfram, ''History of the Goths'', trans. T. J.
