Thapa

Thapa is the surname of a large social group of people, predominantly Chhetris as well as (), from Nepal. Over a period of time, this community has spread to other countries of the world.
Thapa Magars (Mongolian Origin i.e. Tibitean-Nepal Origin) come from the upper part of Nepal to lower parts of Tibet . The thapa chhetris came into existence during the middle age in the Khas Empire .Currently many of the Thapa Chhetri are found in Nepal, and Indian States i.e. Sikkim, Himachal and, Assam as well as in Bhutan and Myanmar. The Thapa Chhetri are from the Kshatriya or Chhetri caste or varna like Basnets of Nepal.
Majority of Thapas Chhetri speak Nepalese language as mother tongue. The thapas are divided into many sub-castes which are the:
* Ghimire Thapa,
* Khulal Thapa,
* Pawar Thapa,
* Mugali Thapa,
* Lamichhane Thapa,
* Godar Thapa,
* Bagale Thapa,
* Poudel Thapa,
* Gagle Thapa,
* Suyal Thapa
who, were settled in the different parts of Nepal. They are said to have descended from the warriors who came to eastern Nepal with the fighting forces of King Prithivi Narayan Shah. One of the former Prime Ministers of Nepal Surya Bahadur Thapa is a Lamichhane Chhetri Thapa. Amar Singh Thapa, Bhimshen Thapa, Mathabar Singh Thapa were all Bagale Chhetri Thapa. Similarly, Bhakti Thapa was a Godar Chhetri Thapa who played an important role in Anglo-Nepalese war.
