Piirus
Piirus is an academic networking site which connects researchers to opportunities – locally, nationally and internationally; beyond academia to the public and not-for-profit sectors; and at all career stages and in all contexts. As a sister service to jobs.ac.uk, it shares the same ethical and sector-based values. It was founded by Fiona Colligan. Piirus was launched in August 2011 as ''Research Match,'' a service designed for researchers within the University of Warwick to find their research match. Users found the site so useful that the site was expanded so that more people could benefit from this tool. Although it offers services which are similar to Academia and ResearchGate, Piirus is not intended to be a rival service to these social networking sites since it allows individuals to set up a profile using keywords and to make connections, particularly at the edges of disciplines, where they may not have previously looked. The developers have acknowledged that early career researchers in particular often feel isolated and even within their own institutions do not know about people exploring similar areas or using similar methodologies.〔 Since 2011, researchers from over 700 institutions across the globe have actively connected with each other and membership is estimated to grow to more than 10,000 researchers by the end of 2015. While Academia, LinkedIn and researchers’ own departmental pages showcase research and publications, Piirus supports researchers right at the earliest stages of the research process, when they are forming new ideas and seeking colleagues to share, expand and describe the research challenge with them. ==References==
