The Kumhars derive their name from the Sanskrit word ''Kumbhakar'' meaning earthen-pot maker. Dravidian languages also confirms to the same meaning of the term ''Kumbhakar''.The term ''Bhande'' used as synonym for the Kumhar caste also means the Pot.
