It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Northern Savonia region. The town has a population of ()〔 and covers an area of of which is water.〔 The population density is . Juankoski became a town in 1998.
Neighbouring municipalities of Juankoski are Juuka, Kaavi, Tuusniemi, Kuopio, Nilsiä and Rautavaara.
