IISYS (Institute of Information Systems) was founded in 2010. It was established as an institute of Hof University of Applied Sciences. The sod cutting ceremony to mark the commencement of construction work on the institute’s new building. The inauguration ceremony of the building took place in January 2013. Currently, 27 people are employed at the institute. The institute is the central research institute for information technology at Hof University. It has four research groups. * Analytical Information Systems * Information Management * Multimedia Information Systems * System Integration It is funded by the European Union, the Bavarian Government and the Oberfrankenstiftung (foundation in Upper Franconia). The institute’s main research activities are applied sciences and knowledge transfer to businesses. The institute’s main task, however, is to examine whether the findings of international research can be applied in companies. If necessary, these findings are adapted and made available to businesses and the public. In this respect, iisys can be regarded as the bridge between international research and actual application in companies. iisys consists of the following three divisions: * Management: The main tasks of the management are to support both the technology and the application division in terms of the acquisition and execution of projects and to ensure the continuous and long-term financing of the institute. * Technology division: The different research groups of the technology division focus on methods for data management and data analysis as well as on developing and embedding networked information systems in business processes. New prototypical solutions for applications are developed on the basis of new algorithms and methods. The aim of these technology projects is the validation and optimization of these algorithms and methods so that companies can use them for real applications. For this purpose, the technology division cooperates with external research institutes. The institute intends that regional companies can benefit from the findings of international research and development in the field of information systems. * Application division: This division focuses purely on services. Together with IT companies, it develops products which, in particular, meet the needs of medium-sized companies. IT companies have a multiplier role and thus regional companies can benefit from the developments of the institute. The following projects are of supraregional importance: * Smart Grid Solar: This project serves as a pilot study for the collection and coordination of the entire energy provision of a region with the aim of having an intelligent power grid. It is carried out in the region Hochfranken (county districts Hof and Wunsiedel in Upper Franconia). Besides the Institute of Information Systems, the University of Erlangen, numerous energy providers and the cities Hof and Arzberg are partners. This project is funded by the Free State of Bavaria.〔(Information provided by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology (in German) )〕 * Migraine Radar (iisys): Examination of the connection between more migraine attacks and extremely changing weather conditions. This project was one of the winners of the competition “What makes healthy?” by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany). Since June 2011 migraine attacks which have been reported via a web-based form and smartphone apps throughout Germany have been registered. Afterwards, these data have been connected with weather data provided by the German Meteorological Service. Until the end of July 2012 more than 10,000 messages about migraine and headache attacks were collected in this way.〔(Prize of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ) (in German)〕 The executive board consists of Richard Göbel, scientific head of institute, Jörg Scheidt, deputy head of institute, and Claus Atzenbeck, managing director.
