The song was composed by Aarno Raninen, who also had composed 1977 entry "Lapponia". In turn, lyricist Veikko 'Vexi' Salmi had also written the lyrics to 1979 entry "Katson sineen taivaan". The song was performed tenth on the night (following Switzerland's Paola with "Cinéma" and preceding Norway's Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta with "Sámiid Ædnan"). At the close of voting, it had received 6 points, placing 19th (last) in a field of 19. The song is sung from the perspective of the tititular "flute man", who sings that while he may not be able to express his feelings in words, he is able to do so with his flute.
