Ghetto

A ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure.〔(ghetto - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary )〕 The term was originally used in Venice to describe the part of the city to which Jews were restricted and segregated.
==Etymology==
Dictionaries list a number of possible origins for the originally Venetian term, including "gheto" or "ghet", which means slag or waste in Venetian, and was used in this sense in a reference to a foundry where slag was stored located on the same island as the area of Jewish confinement (the Venetian Ghetto),〔http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=ghetto&searchmode=none〕 and ''borghetto'', diminutive of ''borgo'' 'borough'.〔''The New Oxford American Dictionary, Second Edition'', Erina McKean, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-517077-6〕 Others theorize that the word is derived from the Hebrew word ''get'', a divorce or separation document.〔Eileen Lavine (2013) (Jewish Word: Ghetto ) Moment Magazine〕
