Awamaki

Awamaki is a small non-profit that works to create economic opportunities and improve social well-being in rural Peru.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=2009 Global Vision Awards )〕 It is registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) 〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Nonprofit Report for Awamaki Us )〕 and in Peru as a non-profit civil association. Awamaki is diversified and currently runs programs in health, education, cultural preservation and sustainable tourism.
Awamaki is located in the town of Ollantaytambo, which is between Cusco, the Incan capital city and tourist mecca, and Machu Picchu, a U.N. World Heritage site and tourist destination. Ollantaytambo is the departure point for Machu Picchu, which nearly half a million tourists visit every year. Nearly every one of these tourists comes through Ollantaytambo on their way to the site. Ollantaytambo also has its own ruins and tourist attractions, so many people visit for a day. The tourism industry has brought prosperity and modern conveniences to Ollantaytambo.
Peru has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but the benefits from this growth are concentrated into the hands of a few. In polls preceding the presidential election 2011, about 80% of the population expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s economy. This is striking in a country that has experienced such strong economic growth, and indicates what other studies show: that economic growth hasn’t reached the country’s poor and middle-class. Rural areas are especially left out of this prosperity.
==Brief History==
Awamaki was founded by Kennedy Leavens,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Awamaki )〕 Paula Reiss and Miguel Galdo in January 2009. Awamaki's principal program is its fair trade weaving project which, as of 2015, supports five associations of women〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Interview with Krissa Henderson at Awamaki )〕 from impoverished rural Quechua communities in the Patacancha Valley.〔http://www.amazon.com/weavers-Awamaki-Weaving-Project-MINISTRIES/dp/B005VXY5SO〕
This program had run successfully for five years previously under another local NGO named CATCCO,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Design )〕 until changes to the Board of Directors prompted project coordinators Kennedy and Miguel to express concern over the future of the project. To remedy this, and ensure a continuous and steady income for the weavers, the project was set up anew under the name Awamaki. Awamaki's mission is to collaborate with the people of Ollantaytambo and its surroundings to foster enduring economic opportunities and to improve social well-being.〔http://globalwa.org/2011/06/awamaki/〕
Awamaki grew quickly and its activities are varied, but are united by the common themes of using international resources and market expertise to help improve the incomes and well-being of people left behind by the modern economy. Currently, the Awamaki Women's Cooperative Program includes 60 women in two weaving cooperatives in Indigenous communities, a knitting cooperative of over 15 women and a sewing cooperative of three. Awamaki has recently started working with a group 10 young Quechua adults who will be hand-spinning luxury alpaca yarns for export. Awamaki operates a fair trade store in Ollantaytambo where they sell woven, knit and hand-spun goods that the cooperatives produce.
Awamaki's homestay program principally serves its volunteers, but is growing as more tourists elect to stay in homestays. Finally, Awamaki's newest women’s cooperative, the Spanish Teachers’ Cooperative, will teach Spanish to volunteers and tourists while providing poor rural women with the opportunity to earn a good income
