Avalament

Avalament: 'Avaler' comes from the French and means to swallow. Avalament is a term used in skiing to describe the way skier bends and extends the legs by managing pressure. It is common misconception that Avalament means to absorb pressure generated in the turn by lifting the legs. To the contrary, when demonstrating Avalament we don't lift the legs. In practice, in order to close the arc in the bottom half of the turn and steer the ski back under the body, the skier has to choose how to manage pressure: (1.) allow the pressure to push the skier tall, (2.) hold the pressure long enough to release the pressure very quickly causing the skier to pop like a 'dolphin turn', or to (3.)manage the pressure such that the skier allows the pressure(forces)to push their legs into their chest while still maintaining good snow contact ! Number three is Avalament.
