A number of Meroitic temples dedicated to Apedemak are known from the Butana region: Naqa, Meroe, and Musawwarat es-Sufra, which seems to be his chief cult place. In the temple of Naqa built by the rulers of Meroe he was depicted as a three-headed leonine god with four arms,〔Claude Traunecker, ''The Gods of Egypt'', Cornell University Press 2001, ISBN 0-8014-3834-9, p.106〕 as a snake with a lion head but he is usually depicted as a man with a lion head.
