.hiv

.hiv is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) operated by Uniregistry. It was proposed by the Berlin-based nonprofit corporation dotHIV, which signed a registration contract with ICANN in March 2014. Domains became available to the general public in August 2014. In September 2015, dotHIV and Uniregistry confirmed the latter's acquisition of the top-level domain (TLD). .hiv is the first open charitable gTLD and its contract with ICANN prevents the extension's operator from making a profit; funds from .hiv domain sales will initially benefit four projects in Rwanda, South Africa, Turkey, and the United States, each of which focus on access to HIV/AIDS treatment.
==History==

The gTLD was inspired by the anti-HIV/AIDS campaign by thjnk, a Germany advertising agency. thjnk's co-owner Michael Trautmann established dotHIV gemeinnütziger e.V. as a nonprofit and applied for the .hiv TLD. Despite the value of the HIV/AIDS field, dotHIV was the only applicant to operate the .hiv TLD. The company signed a registration contract with ICANN in March 2014. Domains were available for select companies and individuals during the July "sunrise" period, and became available to the general public in August 2014. hiv became the first open charitable TLD and, according to one press release, "opens up a dedicated namespace that brings website owners together behind one goal: The end of AIDS".
In September 2015, dotHIV and Uniregistry announced the latter's acquisition of .hiv and their joint hope to complete the TLD's transition before World AIDS Day on December 1, 2015.〔 One announcement read, "Today, Uniregistry takes over the lead in this unique journey to use a top-level domain to promote a social good. The dotHIV charity will continue its work for .hiv and focus on community support. The creative agency thjnk from Hamburg, Germany, longstanding partner of the initiative, will continue to work on behalf of the .hiv top-level domain, exploring new and existing opportunities for social change." Plans to auction the gTLD a few months prior were cancelled after no companies signed up to participate.〔 The auction's reserve price was $200,000. The terms of the deal between dotHIV and Uniregistry were not announced.〔
dotHIV's CEO Carolin Silbernagl said, "In its first year on the market, .hiv has proven that it triggers awareness and rallies new allies for the global AIDS response. The fundraising has led to tangible results as well. Being able to provide WE-ACTx for Hope, our partner organization in Rwanda, with the means to do their life-saving work is an amazing confirmation. Even better our belief that this is just the beginning."〔 Uniregistry's founder Frank Schilling said of the acquisition, "By assuming the registry operations of .hiv, we are taking our core skills and putting them at the service of one of the most urgent challenges of humankind. The United Nations has reconfirmed the opportunities to end the global AIDS epidemic within our lifetime. At Uniregistry, we want to be a part of this ambitious endeavor... Of course, Uniregistry is a for-profit company. But with .hiv, we act as a social enterprise. It is the social mission that will guide the operation of this special TLD."〔〔
