Qillqaywank'a

Qillqaywank'a (Quechua ''qillqay'' to write, ''wank'a'' rock,〔Teofilo Laime Ajacopa, Diccionario Bilingüe Iskay simipi yuyayk'ancha, La Paz, 2007 (Quechua-Spanish dictionary)〕 possibly "rock with inscriptions", hispanicized spellings ''Quilcayhuanca, Quillcayhuanca'') which downstream is called Qillqay is a river in the Ancash Region in Peru.〔(mincetur.gob.pe ) Quebrada Quilcayhuanca〕 It is a right affluent of the Santa River. Qillqaywanka is also the name of the gorge formed by the river.〔escale.minedu.gob.pe - UGEL map of the Huaraz Province (Ancash Region) showing the river erroneously labelled "Qda. Calcayhuanca"〕
The river originates in the Cordillera Blanca west of the mountain Tullparahu near the lake Tullpaqucha. Its direction is to the southwest. It flows along the border of the districts Independencia and Huaraz in the Huaraz Province. Further downstream it is also called Awki ''(Auqui)''. From the point of the confluence with the river Parya ''(Paria)'' in the east of the town Huaraz it receives the name Qillqay ''(Quilcay, Quillcay)''.〔Néstor Chacón A., Javier Jacay H., Iván Moreno C., Geodinamic provesses in the area Quillcay River, Huaraz-Ancash (in Spanish)〕 The river crosses the town from east to west along the border of the suburb El Centenario, now canalized, until emptying into Santa River in the west of the town.
The Qillqaywank'a valley is situated in the Huascarán National Park. It is one of the tourist attractions of the Huaraz Province with views of snow-capped mountains like Antap'iti, Churup, Pukaranra, Rurichinchay and Tullparahu, side trips to glacial lakes and rock paintings.
