They fulfilled the role of connect the city harbour (Downtown Salvador) with the ''Cidade Alta'' (Uptown Salvador). Its bygone importance can be measured by the fact that gave its name to the Dois de Julho beach: ''Litoral da Preguiça'' (''Coast of Laziness'').
