Gl'innamorati

''Gl'innamorati'' (''The lovers'') is a comedy play by Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni. It was published in 1759.
==Synopsis==
Milan, 18th century. It's a year since Eugenia Ridolfi, heiress of a family ruined, has begun meeting Fulgentius, young and rich middle-class man. They are deeply in love, but the relationship is troubled because of his impulsivity and, especially, her jealousy. For example, Eugenia does not bear that Fulgentius frequents his sister-in-law Clorinda, though he's obliged (his brother is in Genoa for work, and he must serve her until the man is back). So they often leave, but equally often return together.
Meanwhile, count Roberto of Otricoli, a friend of Fabrizio's (the landlord maniac of art) arrives in Milan and visits the Ridolfis. Fabrizio, who doesn't want to be outdone, invites him to lunch, despite the disastrous economic situation of the family. Meanwhile, Eugenia clarifies her situation with Roberto, in love with her, telling him she's in love with another man. But Fulgentius, who does not know of this clarification, jealous, threatens to commit suicide. Girlfriend stops him, declares openly the love she feels for him, and the two now seem to have made peace. But Fabrizio has invited to lunch also Clorinda: Eugenia, exasperated and jealous, insults the woman and goes away.
Lunch takes place dramatically (so the servants Lisetta and Tognino, which peek from lock, say): shortly after the nth argument, in fact, Eugenia and Fulgentius leave, and it seems the final goodbye. The girl, to pique and revenge, accepts the marriage proposal of Roberto: Fabrizio, who had also liked Fulgentius, now that the niece is engaged with a noble, forbids her to love and attend him again. The girl agrees, but regrets bitterly a few minutes later: Fulgentius indeed returns with good news for her. His brother is back from Genoa: Clorinda passes again under the protection of her husband, and the boy got the permission to marry the woman he loves, it means her. Eugenia, desperate, is forced to tell Fulgentius that now she's engaged: in the face of right accusations received from her ex-boyfriend, experiencing the blow, faints. When found, her sister Flamminia will give her a wonderful news: she explained the situation to Roberto and he, realizing the situation, broke the engagement with Eugenia. Fabrizio will be convinced too: Fulgentius will marry his niece without ask for a dowry.
Soon after the much longed-for marriage is celebrated.
