''-eis'' is the Old French suffix for ''-ois'', Western French (including Anglo-Norman) keeps ''-eis'', simplified ''-is'' in English. The word ''court'' shares the same etymology but retains a Modern French spelling, after the orthography had changed.〔T. F.
