Alabama Association of School Boards

〔http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/alcode/16/1/16-1-6〕
The Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB), represents all of the state’s local school boards. AASB is affiliated with the National School Boards Association, a nonprofit organization operating as a federation of state associations of school boards across the United States.
The Alabama Association of School Boards' mission is to develop excellent school board leaders through training, advocacy and services. The association, founded in 1949, has enjoyed 100 percent membership of boards of education for many years. It currently serves more than 850 education leaders.
AASB provides members with a wide array of publications and services, including boardmanship training seminars, risk management programs, legal assistance, policy research, a quarterly ''Alabama School Boards'' magazine and regular newsletters covering Alabama State Board of Education, legal and legislative news.
Also under the AASB's umbrella is the Alabama Council of School Board Attorneys (includes automatic membership in the National School Boards Association’s Council of School Attorneys); the Alabama Risk Management for Schools program (a self-funded, not-for-profit risk management program that includes errors and omissions and general liability coverage); and the Legal Assistance Fund (which supports school boards' common interests by assisting members who are involved in cases of statewide significance).
==History==

AASB was organized as the Alabama Association of Members and Executive Officers of County and City School Boards in June 1949. The association was initially composed of 128 individuals from 40 county and 13 city school systems. By July 1949, the association's name was changed to the Alabama Association of School Board Members. AASB was the 39th state school boards association formed in the US.
In 1950, the association approved its first constitution and bylaws. AASB moved its headquarters from Tuscaloosa to Montgomery in 1974.
